I never thought I could care about others as much as I care about my students. Coming from different backgrounds and abilities, they just want to be heard. Even though communication is not their strong suit they express themselves in food. While teaching them a life skill, they also learn to work as a group, trust others, be kind, supportive and just be a good steward to this world. The feeling I get when I see that light switch turn on in the back of their head meaning they understand something is the greatest feeling. I want the best for them and they deserve the best. Not only helping them build a skill and trade but also showing them that food is their culture and identity. It shows them who they are and generations before them. They understand that cooking is their ancestors way of storytelling and showing them who they were and what they can be. My returning students are excited for this year and so am I.
