Students from privilege buy their own copies of the novels in this course, so they can annotate directly on the book. Students who cannot afford to do so, use copies from the school library. This puts them at a disadvantage, purely from a financial divide. To bridge that gap, these supplies will allow students in need to effectively annotate their books, and level the playing field with their classmates who do not have those same struggles. Rigorous courses should be available to all students, and these supplies would help.
