Flexible seating allows students to see/understand first hand how their choices affect their daily life. I have several students who need to be moving as they learn; others are fine on the floor, but too wiggly in a chair to accomplish much. In my classroom, we currently have different styles of work, depending on the subject. I have clipboards, which make learning around the room more feasible. I have found that less structure in seating requirements leads to more learning.
It is important for students to learn their own needs and limits with regard to work at school, especially as they enter middle school with less structure provided. In addition, because of the worldwide pandemic coupled with the poverty level of my community, many students have no safe space where they are comfortable to be themselves. While flexible seating has a positive affect on student learning, it also creates a sort of "living room" where a child can feed their soul with books, conversation and friends.
