Have you ever wanted to learn something so desperately but had the most difficult time maintaining the focus required in order to do so? Many of my students struggle with that on a daily.
After the inconsistency of in-person instruction they've had to endure over the past two years, these third-graders have come to class eager and willing to learn but in need of very specific differentiated instruction. As a result, I engage small groups in individualized lessons throughout the course of the day. To get the biggest bang for my buck so to speak, I utilize online programs coupled with teacher directed instruction; while some students meet with me, others are following a learning path on a tablet. This allows for everyone's unique needs to be met at the same time. However, in order for that modified instruction to be powerfully effective, they need all of the support and focus they can get.
Flexible seating options and headphones will help provide a less distracted environment and in turn give these students an in-class, in-person, and fully supported learning experience - one in which they haven't had for quite some time.
