I teach middle school ELA and not all my students are crazy about typical reading and writing assignments. A number of my students have difficulty following along, either from being struggling readers or for reasons such as dyslexia. The guided reading strips will help my struggling readers follow along. I have had assignments where I thought my students could show what the text is trying to convey by creating collages representing events and/or characters in the story; some students my be better able to express their thoughts this way than writing it all down in essay form. The colored pencils, markers, and paper would allow them to get creative in completing a task such as this. The hang up bags would allow my students (as well as myself) to keep everything organized.
My students love to perform. The easel pads and the document camera would allow them to come in front of the classroom and present their reading assignments. Whether it's providing evidence during a mock trial or justifying why they made their choices throughout responding to a literature prompt, these tools will allow them to better grasp the concept of why they are writing what they write. When we read a text, I have students respond by providing them a prompt. They must provide a strong claim, premise, evidence, and justification before writing their concluding paragraph. Sometimes the reasons get lost in the task of writing. When I allow them to become creative with their responses, they tend to understand the "reason behind the why" better.
