In my special education resource room, I see a variety of students from day to day, many of them stressed out and overwhelmed by the demands of a general education classroom. Sometimes they need help with an assignment and sometimes they just need a space to feel safe and calm down. It is my goal to create an environment they can do both.
I want to create an environment where my students are calm, comfortable, and ready to learn. To do this I want to create a calming corner in the classroom that has sensory items such as a sensory swing, fidgets, soft lighting, and posters to help students learn to self-regulate. Social skills cards within the corner will help these students learn important coping skills that they can utilize daily.
To create an environment of comfortable learning I would like to bring in items such as a new Kindle Fire tablet to use with an Osmo learning device so students can learn new skills and practice without the barriers of writing or reading. Flexible seating options such as yoga ball chairs, wobble seats and wobble cushions can create a welcoming environment where students can wiggle and work. Lap desks also mean students can work where ever they feel comfortable!
With your help, we can make school an inviting place and learning a fun adventure for students of all abilities.
