The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will allow them to build a deeper understanding of foundational K-3rd grade skills. These skills are crucial building blocks to upper level concepts. Due to the covid-19 pandemic many students did not get the opportunity to develop these crucial skills. Because of these missed opportunities the majority of my students are struggling academically in both math and reading. Almost half of my class is on an IPRI (Individualized Program of Reading Instruction) and several also receive Title 1 services. These materials will allow me to begin to fill in these gaps and help repair their foundational skills.
By donating to our project, you will not only help with their academic achievement, you will also allow them to have a safe and comfortable learning environment that will help increase their focus and attention.
The products that I have selected contain manipulatives for reading and math, guided reading materials, stem sets, and flexible seating. The manipulatives will help allow my students to get hands-on experience and build a deeper understanding of the content. According to Marley and Carbonneau (2014), teaching strategies using manipulative materials provide students with a better understanding of the concepts through working with either a direct example of a concrete concept or a representation of an abstract concept.
The portable whiteboard, phonics blocks, magnifying glasses and inference game will be used during our guided reading time. These materials will help students understand what they are reading while keeping them engaged.
Lastly, I have selected flexible seating that will allow my students to have the ability to stay focused and learn in a more comfortable environment. I have noticed the majority of my students gravitate towards the few flexible seating options I currently have available.
