Research shows that the pandemic has taken a great toll on our students. It has led to substantial reductions in student achievement growth. Besides drops in academic achievement, students have been affected by the lack of social interaction with their peers. The resources I request funding for will help me address both the academic and social emotional needs of my students. Building my classroom library with books of varying reading levels, topics, and genres will motivate students of all abilities and interests to read both independently and with other students. I plan to utilize the new selections to initiate literature circles and other reading activities. These activities will give my seventh graders the opportunity to have conversations about books which builds community, helps them learn critical speaking and listening skills, deepens their level of comprehension, and helps them realize that reading is fun! Additionally, these conversations and activities about literature can carry over to my virtual classroom when it becomes necessary to provide online instruction. I'm looking forward to providing my students with resources that promote choice, engagement, and a connection to their peers through cooperative learning.
