Many of my students tell me they feel tired coming to school. They don't seem to be excited to learn new things. In addition to it, their leaning needs are so different which makes hard to implement a lesson to all of them. So I am using a digital reading program called "Readtheory." It is free and provides good date about students' performance. However, it doesn't look exciting for the students to keep up the work. So, I create a reward system which adds an ingredient for banana split by gaining knowledge points by doing the reading quizzes. First they earn a plate for their banana split by doing reading quizzes. A banana, three scoops of ice cream, sprinkles, cholate syrup, cherries on tom and many more will be followed. Actually students chose the topping they love to have them on top of it.
We check the knowledge points and the new badges every week. We set weekly goals to achieve the long term goals and we also award short term rewards to keep on working. By encouraging the progress on their knowledge points, new badges, and the banana split ingredients they earn, students are so much motivated and really read the reading quizzes. I am amazed seeing how many quizzes they can do a day and a week. I watch GoGuardian and they do it at home! Readtheory provided customized reading material for each student to meet their learning need. It filled the gap of multi-level bilingual classroom.
At the end of semester, I got to make 45 banana split plates to celebrate all the hard work my students made. The food item will be used to decorate it. Other items will be used to recognize special efforts. I can't wait to see all the smiley and proud faces.
