To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I am requesting materials that allow my students to learn through STEAM. The projects create situations in which students have to problem solve, critically think to make decisions, and learn through trial and error while using the engineering design process. My intermediate students use the engineering design process for all projects they create. One group of students research linkages when researching simple machines. They are then 鈥渉ired鈥 by a linkage company that has made too many and must redesign linkages to sell to the public by inventing a new linkage product. Another group of students research friction, forces, and velocity and create a working conveyor belt to move a box from point a to b and create packaging for fragile products that must be shipped and dropped to a remote location and must withstand the fall. Another group of students will design an amusement park while researching physics and how different rides work. They then pick several rides they would like to incorporate in their park and design and create each piece of their park. Students study the history and working of a Ferris wheel then use the engineering design process to create their vision. My younger students will research and design layers of a rainforest, study a country's history, and recreate an artifact modeling what happened. My students would love to have the resources they need to build various STEAM projects.
