Although my students have learning disabilities, they will one day transition into a world of work requiring skills beyond the original textbook and classroom walls. Difficulties in reading, comprehension, and math should not be a barrier, but used as a stepping stone to accomplish greatness. In order to transition into post secondary education and employment and to become independent adults, my students need learning activities that will help them to tangibly engage prior knowledge, participate more fluently in guided and independent practice, and to model newly learned skills, math concepts, and domain specific vocabulary. I am eager to incorporate more STEM projects into my classroom which will promote lifelong learning and allow my students to put their math skills to use in real world situations.
These tangible activities will include: Designing a Bridge: Bridges have many shapes, angles, parabolas, lines and the use of formulas to calculate distances and dimensions. The data collected through the building process will also allow for the use of making graphs and creating Stem and leaf plots. 2)The Million Dollar Project (I love this!!): Budgeting, check writing, planning, estimations, building houses, Geometry concepts(angles, square footage, etc. 3)Rotational Symmetry Art Project: Math and Art combined, symmetry (shapes, buildings, clothing, geometrical shapes and figures). This project鈥檚 materials can also be used for Geometry transformations, rotations, and reflections. 4)Build a balloon project: A combination of Science and Math using formulas. 5)Zip line Project:Geometry angles and Algebra Slopes.
With these projects, I want to ensure that every one of my students with learning disabilities has an opportunity to actively participate in engaging and exciting learning experiences that will last well into their future. That鈥檚 what gives me JOY!!!
