As a kindergarten teacher, I understand the need, importance and power of play, and the valuable opportunities for social interactions and meaningful learning it brings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my students have encountered limited social interactions and time in the classroom with their peers, emotional unease and fear about leaving the home, being in school, and being around others.
Our current situation due to the pandemic has made the need for cozy, home-like classroom environments where children can experiment with familiar scenarios even more important. My project, The Kitchen is the Heart of the Classroom, will provide just this: a home living area for dramatic play where students can learn through play with their peers in an environment which feels familiar, cozy, and safe.
