As a 9th-12th grade special educator, the students that I support suffer from anxiety; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); orthopedic and visual impairments, specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and dysgraphia; and/or autism. The materials and supplies that I am requesting will help to create an inviting space that resembles home so fears and apprehensions surrounding school are minimized. The novels requested will be used for in my modified curriculum, diploma bound 11th-12th grade English class; the pencils, expo markers, colored pencils and markers will encourage learning and creativity; the lap desks will be utilized by students in wheelchairs and also by those who are using flexible seating; and the refrigerator and storage organizers will house snacks and supplies. Additionally, the scents from essential oils and the use of plants provide a sense of calm for students who may otherwise be having difficulty acclimating to the school day.
