My students need materials to solve critical thinking and engineering problems through projects. After an introduction to information about strength, force, and load-bearing they should be able to construct a bridge and a crane that can both support 2-3 kilograms.
They need to "construct it" not just read about others building it. I want them to build simple machines and structures to explore physical science concepts. They need to work on teaming and other soft skills that will make them successful in the workplace.
When students design and create a structure they take ownership of the project. They need the opportunity to test their design and back to the drawing board if it doesn't work.
