When writing this grant, I was reminded about a quote that was written by Robert M. Hutchins, which states that "The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives". One of my goals as an educator is to give my students opportunities and tools they need, that allows them to have ownership over their education. When students take ownership to have pride about what they are learning, they are more likely to develop a love of learning that continues throughout their lives. One way to help foster this love of learning is giving them materials and activities that are engaging, fun and hands-on. We want to make learning memorable no matter the subject.
It is vital to their success in school for my students to fall in love with learning in Kindergarten. My 18 kindergarteners have been working hard to learn the fundamentals of reading and math. Despite most of their lives being lived through a pandemic and not getting the normalcy that previous classes have had, they have continued to grow and learn. They have made me extremely proud of what all they have already accomplished this school year. That being said, I have noticed the drop in assessment scores. My previous classes came with more of a firm foundation in their math and literacy skills. This grant would provide me with needed materials that would help close this gap. These materials would meet my students where they are in literacy and math. When children are provided with the needed materials that are also fun and engaging, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and ownership over what they are learning, teaching them to be a life long learner. Which in return sets them up for success in reading and math.
