I love teaching junior high students; they are at a crucial crossroads as they transition their thinking and habits from childhood mindsets towards adulthood. I cherish the role I get to play in this process. As they maneuver this transition, however, one common attribute that I frequently encounter is that my middle schoolers no longer get excited to go to the library, and they nearly always groan when I give them a reading assignment. One of my primary goals as their ELA teacher is to reawaken my students' excitement and love for reading, writing, and ultimately learning.
Since the pandemic, I have noticed my students seem even more disengaged. Sometimes I feel like I could stand on my head, and they still wouldn't bat an eye. In addition, I have not been able to purchase books or curriculum since I moved from teaching English language learners to ELA. This grant would enable me to choose resources that I believe will help open their eyes and bring the spark into the classroom.
Thank you so much for investing in teachers, so we can invest in our students!!
