Students in all of my classes interact more often with digital media than any other source of information. In recent years educators have tried to find ways to provide media for students to consume. However, providing opportunities for students to create authentic media as a classroom outcome requires specific equipment. The materials for this project will provide students with the opportunity to both produce media themselves in the form of podcasts and consume helpful and creative media through virtual reality experiences.
In social studies classes students will interact with and research modern problems associated with society and government.
Then as an alternative to a traditional writing or presentation assignment, they will use these microphones to create podcasts in small groups. History students will use them to record oral history in their own lives and communities. Often students are limited to the options of writing a paper or preparing a presentation. This will give them the opportunity to create authentic content in a medium that they are familiar with and many of them enjoy.
Every social studies teacher would love to be able to take their students to important historical and government related sites. There are now many virtual tours available online for students to visit important places like the Lincoln Memorial or a Civil War battlefield. Virtual reality headsets will allow students to explore these areas in new and creative ways that will make these experiences more personal.
Through experiencing virtual reality tours and creating authentic real-world content such as podcasts students can interact with digital material in creative and new ways
