I am a first-year high school teacher working in a high-poverty school in Oakland, CA. My students are coming back from the pandemic facing budget cuts and school closures in the district which means that there isn't a lot of extra funding for schools. I'd like to stock the classroom library with materials to encourage a critical reading of U.S. history, be able to print materials in our classroom for their use, and make it a welcoming environment where they can feel at home with plants, phone charging stations, posters that reflect their cultures and communities, and play music when they are doing independent work.
As a first-year teacher who started amidst the Covid pandemic, making my classroom (and our school) feel like a second home for my students is a top priority to encourage them as primarily students of color who will be the first generation to go college when they complete high school. Thank you for considering this campaign.
