For first and second grade students, learning math should be fun. There's no better way to make sense of counting, addition, subtraction, place value, etc. than to "play with math" using hands-on concrete materials. The materials in this grant will be placed in a classroom that has virtually no materials for this type of learning.
The students deserve the chance to learn in a way that capitalizes on their natural abilities to understand concrete objects before attempting to translate these understandings to an abstract written form.
