One of the biggest hits to student achievement related to the advent of Covid-19 has been in the the drastic decline of students' reading abilities. This has been especially true for students who are language learners and those with disabilities. Abrupt changes in school schedules, online learning, and other Covid-related policies has made the struggle of reading even harder.
The Kindle e-readers, stylus, and iPad would provide opportunities for students to engage with a variety of texts in many different ways. They would both provide a wide range of both written texts and audiobooks. Students can highlight and search for new vocabulary words. They can have more difficult texts dictated to them to make the reading process easier. Students can even make marginal annotations which they can save and review at a later time.
My goal is to curb the adverse effects that Covid-19 has had on students' reading skills by having one class iPad and two kindle e-readers available for all students in both my Reading and Language Arts classes. Students could use these devices to read, research, demonstrate, and practice grade-level skills. With your generous donation, students will become increasingly prepared for success in the coming years as we return to a sense of normalcy.
