Many of my students are on the autism spectrum and having a clean and organized classroom is essential to their success. Clutter and disorder can create dysregulation that derails a student's day and causes disruption to the entire class. The materials I have requested will help me provide this calming environment for my students. In addition, I am requesting various materials that will help enhance group project work, which is a focus of my classroom and will help them develop the social skills they will need after High School.
Most of my students require accommodations to support their learning and I like to have everything they may need available and visible to them for easy access. This also helps encourage my students to develop the ability to regulate their own emotions and meet their own needs. Wall-mounted organizers will help students see what materials are available to them. The headphones are necessary for many students who need a way to block out sound when trying to focus. Personal whiteboards will help with writing exercises that are difficult on computers or using traditional pencil and paper. My hope is that these supplies will provide a richer learning environment for my students and will help them develop skills that will serve them outside of the classroom.
