A document camera is an invaluable tool in any classroom. Not having one this year, I have seen so many ways in which one could have been a huge benefit to my students. As a 3rd-5th grade ELA teacher, I would love to use a document camera to share findings when we label our mentor sentence, add word examples to our prefix/suffix of the week study, and model proper writing skills.
Having a document camera will provide all of my students with easier access to all of my instruction and learning materials. Instead of finding a PDF of a document and sharing it to the Smart Board, or walking back and forth to write on the white board, I can simply show whatever needs to be shown, quickly and easily. This will be extremely useful in showing tools to my students who have been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. If we must go back to virtual learning, it will be an easy way to share what I see with them on the computer, as well as in person.
A document camera is also a wonderful tool to teach students how to become the presenter or teacher. Students can share their learning with their classmates, where they often find new and unique ways to make sense of the lesson. This further increases engagement and motivation, as they do want to be a positive example for their peers. These are only a few of many ways in which a document camera can benefit our classroom.
