The project is in conjunction with a Math 8 remediation class that was created for the 2021-2022 school year. These classes are smaller and provide more one-on-one teaching and assistance to each student. The students in this class have gaps from grade-level peers with basic math skills such as fractions, integers, solving equations, and graphing needed for High School Graduation and Career Preparation.
The iPad allows for the teacher to teach from any student's desk and have it project to Canvas on screen for all students to see and learn while allowing the teacher to be in proximity to all students and provide individual help. The iPad also allows for individual practice during class for students on specific Apps that are not available on Chromebook. The Canvas app works best with a tablet that is fast and has capable memory, that is why the iPad Pro is ideal for the project.
The goal is to prepare the 8th-grade students to be proficient at 8th-grade math so they will have a higher passing rate in Secondary Math II (SM II), the 9th-grade math class. At present, a majority of the remediation classes are not passing the SMII class and repeating the class in 10th grade as well, leading to a higher drop-out rate among this low-socioeconomic and highly diverse population
