Many of my students have problems with phonemic awareness, much more so than any other year. I believe the difference is because the students and teachers wore masks last year. We are working hard on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. Part of this instruction is working with words and syllables. We stretch sounds and write words and word parts. We also dictate sentences and use what we have learned.
In my Reading Recovery training, I learned that it is important to use white paper and black marker to do writing and word work. I try to use black and white as much as possible, especially when working with students who have phonemic awareness issues, letter reversal problems, and struggle in reading and writing.
In small group instruction, we use black whiteboard markers and our kidney table to dictate words and sentences that go along with our phonics instruction and our reading. Our table is a brown wood laminate. It doesn't offer the clean white contrast, so words are not crisp and easy to see. I have tried putting 12 inch diameter sticky dots on the table , but they peel up, are hard to clean, and they aren't white. Also, the round shape isn't conducive to writing sentences. A whiteboard table would really make things much better for my little kiddos! Thank you for considering funding our project!
