The books I have chosen are a variety of award winning and high quality books by diverse authors. During the pandemic, my students did not always have access to books, particularly high interest books to read outside of class. I also realized that my classroom library did not serve many of my students who crave history and realistic fiction.
This is an opportunity to help get my students back in touch with literature and update my library with books that represent the many cultures and interests present in my classroom. With this collection of books, students will be able to read about modern day and historical events relevant to their own cultures and the cultures of their classmates. They will have the opportunity to take these books home and share them with their classmates, sparking conversations and connections. I have also taken into account my large population of readers in need of support, building my stock of novels for targeted reading levels that will still interest students.
I believe this donation will be a benefit to my classroom culture for months and years to come, helping students develop a dynamic, unifying, and multicultural understanding of the world and history through literature. With knowledge of themselves and others, they will be empowered by success in reading.
