One way to support social-emotional learning at school is to help students see themselves in the stories they read. My students come from diverse backgrounds and each one of my kids has their own story to tell. I have chosen books with characters who are their same age and may face some of the same situations that they do in their everyday life.
In order to engage students, they need to relate to what they are learning about. During the pandemic, many students became disconnected or overwhelmed. I want them to think "If that character can do it, so can I, because I am just like them". My goal is to create a classroom library with modern representation in mind! Let's read together!
