Do you remember your favorite book as a young adult? Do you remember what book started your love of reading? It only takes one book to start students on a lifelong love of reading and that's what I want to do. COVID-19 has left some learning gaps especially with reading and I want to close that gap. I have found that many students have read less during COVID-19 and I want to change that. I believe reluctant readers have not found the right book for them. For this reason, I want to hold "Book Tasting Events" and also "Speed Dating with Books". Book tastings or speed dating with books are events where students sample different books or magazines of varying genres in a relatively short period of time. Students have just enough time with a book to spark their interest and create a desire to continue reading. They are able to sample a variety of genres and might even surprise themselves with motivation to read a book from a genre they never have before. I love it when reluctant readers become hooked on a good book by holding fun activities where students are motivated to read.
By donating to our project, you will help inspire young readers, increase academic achievement, student attention, and focus.
Not only do I need to expand my classroom library to support reading, I also need to provide flexible seating choices to keep students engaged in learning and increase their attention span. Right now I only have two options for students--sitting on plastic chairs or hard floors. Wobble pads and floor chairs are fun, soft seating options that will help students stay focused. They would be a welcomed addition to our classroom.
