Brain science consistently demonstrates the benefits of hands-on learning and movement to support learning. Yet, the primary tasks of reading and writing, we do in my high school English classroom are often sedentary. The under desk ellipticals, and natural cycles in the chairs will keep kids moving even while writing and reading which increases retention and productivity. An important side benefit is physical and mental wellbeing.
The pandemic norm of learning included slouching on couches and laying in beds, but my classroom needs support for calm, alert, and focused learning.
I am especially concerned about the mental well-being of my students, many who are experiencing high anxiety and depression. These supplies will also support mindfulness practices in class that we do each day to calm cortisol levels, increase brain focus, and engage in the productive struggle of active learning.
