In my third grade classroom, we talk about mirror books and window books and the importance of both in our reading lives. Mirror books remind us of our own lives and experiences and make us feel less alone. Window books offer a "window" into the lives of those with different experiences than our own. Both are important for a rich and balanced reading life. I would love to be able to build a library with many more books in Spanish for my students, that reflect not only their language but also their cultural backgrounds and experiences. I would also like to be able to purchase more chapter books. There are so many diverse and incredible authors that I know my children would love and that would enrich their reading lives.
