Every day, we have 30 minutes of independent reading time. However, actually getting students to read has been a struggle. There are many who, with time, have fallen in love with reading again but generally the idea of sitting still and moving their eyes across a page for 30 whole minutes both terrifies and frustrates them. That is until I brought in some graphic novels from home. I pulled books from my shelf and matched them with students I thought would be interested in them and I saw students actually reading. They actually comprehended what was going on and they were proud of themselves for finishing something. I would love to get more graphic novels for my classroom and enough so that I can match every student with a new book! These kids are struggling with basic literacy but I think graphic novels are the gateway to get them reading again.
