Gholdy Muhammad creates a framework for teaching historically relevant literacy underlining that in Black Literary Societies, "Reading was the foundation of all learning" ("Cultivating Genius," 2020). Even now, in the midst of the digital age, at the dawn of the metaverse, reading continues to be a powerful and necessary tool for personal and professional growth, not to mention community and civil engagement; yet too few students emerge from their public education as confident, engaged, joyful readers.
Through these small collections of books by beloved and contemporary Latinx writers, students will have the opportunity to choose a book to loose themselves in, share the company of a small reading group as they journey through the story and ultimately, I hope, find something that nurtures their sense of self and fosters their aspirations in these pages.
Moreover, I hope the opportunity to read these books will make avid readers of all my students.
