The thing that makes me most excited to teach Chemistry is the *doing* part. Seeing things react, flame tests, and combustion reactions were the most engaging part of my high school chemistry class 10 years ago and I was thrilled to give the same experience to my students. What is Chemistry, after all, without a lab component? Imagine my surprise, then, when I arrived at my school to absolutely minimal lab supplies. There are no sets of beakers, no bunsen burners, only a few test tubes, and minimal safety supplies. As my students learn about balancing reactions, determining molar mass, and how to know whether a reaction has occurred, I have found myself wishing for more for them. We move to a new school building in January. My new lab is beautiful and I am beyond excited. However, there are still no burners or beakers to run the experiments that this lab is begging to host. Many of my students have benefitted by watching videos of chemistry working and I find myself wondering often how much more they could grasp the material if they could have hands-on experience.
