Books will be used with my small groups and in supplement to other teachers. I have selected books that discuss diversity specifically, as well as books like Dr. Seuss that will challenge the readers with pronunciation and context reading, elevating those base concepts they are already getting in class. The Geronimo Stilton books are phenomenal for raising student Vocabulary, introducing new words in large, illustrated text so they have an opportunity to learn it. I also have to work with students on subjects like math, one of our big focuses this year is instilling multiplication as a solid concept, hence the cards. We are also working hard on our fractions, and understanding why they are important. Fractions can be daunting to young students. so taking a familiar game like War and adding fractions is brilliant and a great way to use that competitive spirit they have. The graph paper, sticky notes, markers, folders, and other office supplies are directly important to the concept of empowering my students. Each student will have their own folder, with data and charts that they will have helped make, making it a hands on experience, and showing them how the future is in their hands, and making it all the more satisfying to celebrate growth. The candy, toys, fidgets, fancy pens, and the like are all incentives. Not just to do their best, but to show up every day. Sometimes long term goals need short term incentives, and sometimes doing your multiplication tables is boring, but even a boring task is a little better with some chocolate, a unicorn pen, or pete the cat pencil.
