The use of these sets of books will help students see their own world through different perspectives, races, and cultures. Books are an almost daily activity in my classroom as I have my students complete independent reading for the first 10 minutes of most classes. I want them to have a love of reading and in the light of COVID-19, it seems as though my students struggle to even find something to read that is not on their phone or not given to them as a summary. I am hoping these books will help my students see that they can continue their own learning without me or other teachers because these diverse books can help them grow in any way that they need. If they are struggling with family issues, they can read about a story where someone else is struggling too and how they overcame it, for example.
Even though these are only a few titles from authors that are current or at least more current than what our department books have to offer, I am hoping that my students can learn something about themselves as they read these books. Or at the very least, be able to have guidance on how to help others.
I have also added scissors to my list as my students wish to create more items that showcase their love of reading, writing, speaking, or listening through a creative outlet. I don't have enough supplies for everyone so I'm hoping that by receiving a class set of scissors student can create more collages, dioramas, etc. that helps showcase their minds and opinions in a different way rather than the standard writing way.
