This project will support my students in a variety of ways. Being isolated from other deaf/hard of hearing classmates and signing adults during COVID-19 closures and the distance education experience had a negative impact on most students' academic skills, language learning, and social/emotional interactions.
First, most of my students have language deficits. To build and extend students' vocabularies, colorful visual aids are necessary. The cardstock, printer, and ink will help me develop these materials for everyday use. Some of these printed materials will be used class-wide use while others will directly address individual education plans.
Second, students will use STEM building toys and dress-up clothes in our dramatic play area and as reward time for target behaviors. These items will provide opportunities to share and participate in small group interaction. The party favor prizes will be used as tangible rewards for students' weekly academic and behavioral successes.
Third, I plan to send home American Sign Language dictionaries, word cards, and other resources for students to use with their families. These materials will help family members learn how to sign and help their deaf/hard of hearing student improve reading and writing skills. Students will utilize the canvas bags and index card boxes to organize and transport materials to and from school.
