I teach in a rural school in Northeastern South Dakota. The classroom that I teach in, is not a science lab. This limits the amount and types of labs that I can do with the students. The products that I have chosen will allow the students to engage in hands-on experiments that are safe and effective. Having supplies like note cards and popsicle sticks allow the students to construct, engineer and test different design challenges. Many of these engineering challenges require basic supplies such as pipe cleaners paper plates and straws . Another hands on experiment that the children participate in is the making of different types of slime. It is a great way to see the different states of matter and to investigate and compare the different polymers and non-Newtonian fluids. There is also a need for constructed lab kits that follow a scientific process to help the students learn about specific topics, I have include a lab kits that will encourage the students to spend some time focusing on applying scientific procedures and principles. The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding and competency in many scientific elements.
Hands-on and engaging activities are extremely important for students success. My students often have needs in their learning that are not met in a standard curriculum setting. We do have many different activities that meet some of the needs, but then I am still left supplementing and creating resources to help my students learn on my own. With these products, I will have the resources needed to continue to create a hands-on working atmosphere that will improve student learning .
