鈥淎 poem is a small but powerful thing. It has the power to reach inside of you, to ignite something in you, and to change you in ways you never imagined. There is a feeling of connection and communion 鈥 with the author and the subject 鈥 when we read a poem that articulates our deepest feelings.鈥 鈥 Kwame Alexander.Kwame's Alexander's novel, Crossover, is written about to African American brothers.
This perspective is one that many students in my classroom have not had access to, yet is so relatable to many. The young boys of this novel go through normal trials and tribulations; along with more severe events such as the death of their father. A third of my students are below reading level. A large portion of my students (male and female) play basketball. This novel is so beautifully written that is is engaging AND accessible to learners all across the board.
