We have a diverse learning community at our school with a very high ELL population. We have varieties of academic abilities, meaning students' levels range from early emergent to fluent readers. Students start the year at their own readiness level. Our teachers must find their starting point so that learners of all ages can make growth and be successful. Our students love to visit the library to check out books, but many of them request items that we just don't have. Our books are so well-loved that many of them need to be replaced. New books will help replenish lost materials from the pandemic. The books I have selected are more inclusive than what we currently have in our media center. Our library should reflect diversity so that our students will feel represented in our books.
I want our media center to house books that mirror our students' lives, as well as provide insight into the experiences of those who aren鈥檛 like them. Having new, relevant materials will help replenish our library and allow our students to grow academically, socially and emotionally. As teachers, we must advocate for our students to ensure that every child feels accepted and special each time they walk into school. Through the Donors Choose Project, I hope that our students will be able to read the books they love!
