A sensory space can open up a whole new world for individuals with physical or cognitive impairments. Schools and centers that work with these individuals can provide great therapeutic benefits to all of their students by offering them a multi-sensory experience.
The sensory room/area would be a therapeutic space with a variety of calming activities that would support students with special needs. This personalized sensory room/area will help my students calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others.
A majority of my students often exhibit significant behaviors and/or lack self-regulation skills. Research indicates children raised in poverty are especially likely to exhibit acting out behaviors, impatience, impulsivity, and inappropriate emotional responses (Goodwin 2013). 鈥淐hildren with poor self-regulation disrupt an entire classroom鈥 (Perry). Self-regulation is an important skill for students of all ages. We want to create a sensory room/area for calming and activities, to help teach our students self-regulation and focusing skills
My Students would benefit so much with a place to go where they can calm down, wake up, or participate in activities that help them self-regulate and focus. These sensory spaces can be used to help my students achieve hundreds of individual goals.
