It is important now more than ever to bring social and emotional learning to our youth as we continue to navigate the challenges of a global pandemic. As the lives of so many have been affected by this hardship, it is absolutely crucial to address the social and emotional issues in the wake.
With these supplies, I plan to instruct our students on CASEL competencies, which include skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. We will learn about mindfulness and calming strategies, explore emotions through play/games, art, and reading, and discuss difficult social situations through children's literature. We will also use helpful tools and toys to foster deeper understandings of what it means to be mindful, like Omi the Elephant Meditation Toy and PAWZ the Calming Pup.
Our children need to know that we see them, hear them, and value them as their most authentic selves. They also need to have the tools in which to create a more equitable and just future for all. We can do this by encouraging and teaching the skills of social and emotional health and wellbeing.
