Daily, my fifth graders are required to read for five to ten minutes once they finish their independent work. A majority of my students grab a book from my classroom library, instead of bringing a book from home. Most of the time, they pick up a Guinness Book of World Records or "pretend" to read a chapter book that they aren't very interested in. It is difficult to get them to engage in their books when they grab a new one every day. I hope that new additions to my library will encourage my students to pick up the same book every day and actually enjoy the novel.
My fifth graders have repeatedly said to me, "Mrs Freeman, I can't find a book I want to read, all of your books are lame!" A majority of my books have come as hand me downs or as a purchase from a used book sale. My library is not catered to my students interests or newly released books. I hope that this project will update my library and help encourage my students to find a story that they love.
