All the students in my resource classroom have specialized needs. The students attend my room because of a deficit in one or multiple academic areas. The deficit is typically 2-4 grade levels below their current academic year. This deficit requires me to provide multiple learning strategies to determine what helps them learn. I need to provide as many hands-on learning materials as possible to determine what will help the student close their academic gap. The supplies I have chosen focus on the three educational areas with the most need for my room which are phonics skills, place values, and multiplication. The academic standards my materials focus on are 2.NBT.B.9, 3.OA.A. and RF.3.3.
By providing my students with these materials they will close their learning gaps, increase their academic abilities, and build their confidence in learning. I chose the materials not only to increase my students’ abilities but also give them the independence to learn. Once my students understand how the materials are used, they will need limited supervision to complete activities independently. This independence is necessary for students to build their confidence which will drive them to try harder not only in my resource classroom but also their general education classroom as well. Almost every item requested has been used in my room and have limited quantities or I have seen been successful in other rooms. I am confident through my own teaching experience and working with some more experienced and remarkable colleagues that these materials will make a real impact in my students lives.
