Ewoldt and Morgan (2017) noted that 鈥淐olor-coding visual organizers provides another layer of support for writing development.鈥 and 鈥淯sing color-coding in combination with strategy instruction has the potential to improve overall understanding.鈥 The students will be able to write a coherent paragraph with a topic sentence, relevant evidence, appropriate analysis and explanation, and a conclusion or last thought, using T-E-A-L and the color-coding strategy.
The color connection tends to stay in their minds as they write. Students will use an assigned color for each required element of their paragraph.
Writing is too complex to expect students to master without teaching them specific strategies for each part. By using the T-E-A-L strategy and assigning colors for each part, students will "see" that they have included all required information in their writing and become better writers.
