I allow my students to make choices for where they learn and work in my classroom everyday. Some students feel a sense of confidence and safety picking the same spot everyday where others like to change up their routine. I am always telling my students to 鈥減ick a spot that works best for your body or 鈥減ick a spot where you can do your best work鈥. Giving my students choice of their seating options allows them to gain that sense of control that many young lives might not get that opportunity outside of school. Many of my students love working at a high table with cushion chairs, a couch with a lap desk or clipboard, a bungee chair with a clipboard, on the floor with a lap desk, on the floor curled up with a blanket and a clipboard or in a swivel chair. They鈥檝e made the joke that I would let them work on the ceiling if that meant them working their best and they鈥檙e right! My students become more motivated and less distracting in our lessons when they are comfortable in the spot that works best for their bodies.
