The best part of my job is interacting with my students on a personal level. I would like to create a more comfortable space for them in my office to be able to relax and deescalate when needed. The pandemic brought a lot of hardships to my students and the social emotional need is high this year but the items in this project will continue to benefit future students for many more years. These items will help me create a space that is more inviting and comfortable for my students when they are experiencing higher than normal social emotional needs.
Studies show that when we are stressed or struggling with mental health problems our brains process environmental cues (lights, sounds, visuals, etc.) differently. Creating a comfortable space can have a positive effect on my student's moods, thoughts, and behaviors while in my office.
I have shopped for d茅cor that will help with the aesthetic of my office as well as some items that will aid in stress relief for my students. I have shopped for chairs so they can sit more comfortably, a diffuser to aid in eliminating stress and de-escalation, a table for the stress relief items in the cart (stress balls, magnetic sculptures...), shelves and a bookshelf for my student to have easy access to self help books and resources, and wall d茅cor that will help motivate and boost self-esteem.
