As a school psychologist, it is my duty to evaluate all children being considered for special education. It is important to encourage kids and teachers to do their best when requesting their time and attention to get the best results possible. To do that rewards and incentives are an important part of my testing strategy. My goal for the students that are able to use the fidgets and other sensory toys is to boost focus and productivity by providing a mental break and making it easier to pay attention afterward. The snacks will be used as a reward during or after assessment for children. The other items such as pencils and chocolate will be used as incentives for other teachers to complete long screeners that provide necessary insight into the students’ social and emotional functioning when determining special education eligibility. These both help to meet the NDE SEAD standards of building positive relationships, self-management and understanding/managing emotions.
