Our students in K-2 are so intrigued with life science and enjoy learning about the tiniest organisms to the largest. Life sciences support comprehension and logical reasoning. Our students truly enjoy the life cycle of the butterfly because it incorporates so much of what they are learning to include the emotional connection as they care for the development of a living being. Newly hatched butterflies need a safe place to call home. The greenhouse will serve several purposes. It will be a protected incubator as butterflies mature through the life cycle and a safe nursery upon hatching. Did you know that butterflies do not fly at night and the necessary plants and fauna they need are not easy to find, similar to mother's milk for a newborn. Our greenhouse will house the milkweed a baby butterfly needs to drink after entering the world.
Along with a greenhouse nursery, I would love to create a traveling nature themed library. Children's books that foster knowledge and appreciation of the world will support our goal to learn about the life cycle and it's implementation. I want to use these books to explore how nature works and ways we can preserve and support creatures like the butterfly.
