The last year and a half online really set the kids back when it comes to analyzing and understanding text. A huge focus for us this year is focusing on annotating our texts to help us pick it apart during our analysis (ELA RL.6.1). Due to our budget, most of our reading materials are online. While we are reading, I tend to be stuck up front while modeling how to annotate and adding students' ideas to the board. Having an I-Pad will allow me to circulate the room and provided differentiated instruction in real time, vs after the initial lesson. This will also allow me to save our class discussion notes and share them online for students to access at any time. This allows for a more personalized instruction instead of just power points.
We all need a little extra help sometimes, and that is completely okay. In my classroom, I have made it very clear to my kids that I care about their success beyond just their grades. Many of these students are struggling with coming to school everyday with the proper materials. It is quite shocking how just one pencil can determine their success.
