My students face so many challenges outside the walls of my classroom, so I make it my goal daily to make them feel safe and loved inside. One of the ways I do this is by implementing activities to teach them social/emotional, communication, vocational and life skills that will be beneficial to them as they leave my classroom and enter the real world.
The school shut-downs due to COVID-19 were tragic in so many ways, and impacted students with differing abilities arguably more than any other population. So much of what the students had spent years learning was suddenly changed in an instant, and learning online proved to be extremely challenging for students and families. Through this project, I would like to bring back some consistency and re-teach some of the much-needed basic skills that were lost in the last couple of school years.
