As a new teacher coming into my classroom in the middle of the school year, I want to give my students a glimpse of the culture that will be established by their new teacher from day one. I want to create a culture in my classroom that allows students to feel comfortable and safe within the four walls. To do that, my first project will be to implement a cozy corner in my classroom. The cozy corner will be located in the back of the classroom, away from most of the students. There, a group of students will sit in bean bag chairs with pillows to offer more comfort. There will also be a rug under the bean bags to give the students a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the classroom. While most of the time spent in the cozy corner will be reading time, there will be a table to let students complete some work there.
Giving the students a cozy corner will boost engagement and morale. Students will see the cozy corner and would automatically want to work in it. The cozy corner can be seen as a privilege, so if students work hard continuously and give their best efforts, they will continuously be rewarded with the cozy corner. Implementing this will also allow students, specifically those with anxieties and other classroom placement accommodations, a chance to produce their best work. Students need a change of environment where they can sit back and make school feel more like a home. If my cozy corner will allow the students to get their work done and feel comfortable, then my classroom is working to its full potential.
